Stone The Crow knows what it wants to be – alternative, licked with classic rock and grunge.
Niel Bekker – 24.com album review October 2008.

The Sick-Leaves is singer/songwriter/guitarist Eksteen Jacobsz.
It all started with the influences of Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Who and the Jesus and Mary Chain. After seeing the Beatles’ anthology on television in ’95 Jaocbsz, decided to learn a few chords on guitar and see where it took him. Six years later a two year stint in London followed with infamous band the Infidels, who played the London scene extensively.

He started his own project; The Sick-Leaves in 2004 after his return to SA. The drummer Warrick Poultney (who played the drums on both Tunnel Vision and Stone the Crow) joined him for all that followed including band practise, many local gigs, Oppikoppi 2006, whirlwind tour Cape Town tour and lots of sick leave from work.
Writing for The Sick-Leaves first album, Tunnel Vision, also started in earnest which was produced by legendary underground producer Matthew Fink being.
The album was released in April 2006 through independent label Sheer Music with Sony/ATV publishing Tunnel Vision and the subseqnet second album: Stone the Crow.

Tunnel Vision was nominated for the best alternative album at the 2007 South African Music Awards. The Sick-Leaves also played the local live scene extensively during ’06 and ’07 and notable performances included a main stage performance at the 2006 Oppikoppi, support slots for some of the major bands in SA, Studio 1 on MK89, and a live acoustic set on Channel Go Rock and TuksFm.

Two singles were play listed on 5Fm : “All these foolish things(I’ve said)” and “Such a Waster”, that went to no. 11 on the 5FM Top 40. Four singles were submitted to campus radio and all four did very well on their respective charts, with All these foolish things(I’ve said), Such a Waster and To Below and Above reaching no. 1.

Recording for the second album, Stone the Crow, started in September ’07 with Matthew Fink again on production duties. It was released 30 June 2008. The album contains 13 tracks. The first ever Sick-Leaves video will also be released in July for “the Black Disciples” off Stone the Crow. The Sick-Leaves signed a world wide digital distribution deal with Justmusic in June ’08.

Media reviews of The Sick-Leaves albums:

Glowing with energy and capable of delivering on all its promises, Stone The Crow is one of the more exhilarating releases of the year so far.
Bruce Dennill, October 2008.The Citizen newpaper review of Stone the Crow

Jacobsz, possibly the next local guitar hero, searches relentlessly for variation in his tight corner of rock 'n roll – and finds it.. There's only one Noel Gallagher – he's in Manchester. New poster boys for 90s rock are needed. We may have found one.
Niel Bekker – 24.com album review October 2008.

This South African band is more than just a clever name, they’re the freshest thing local rock has seen in a long time. The band has also succeeded in producing an unique spin on a genre that refuses to die out.”
Nikki Temkin - Sunday Times

Tunnel Vision, a shimmering, melodious triumph…the best SA rock album of the year by a country mile.
Matthew Freemantle – SL Magazine
